Scarlet is a young mechanic from the ruined Republic of Castile. Burdened by debt and struggling to survive, she reluctantly travels to the city of Aurelune, a place shrouded in supernatural secrets, after learning that her supposedly dead father might have left behind an inheritance. Instead, she uncovers a terrible truth: Scarlet is destined to become the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse, a harbinger fated to bring about the end of the world.
Now aware of her existence, the Four Horsemen—inhuman demigods who long ago abandoned their humanity in service of the divine—will use every bit of their unworldly power to find Scarlet, kill her, or do much worse in the name of destiny and the gods they serve.
